Chapter 6
Well-Armed: Transmitting
Values to Children
t t t
The battle scene is a bright, stimulating sight-and-sound cacophony aimed at the mind and spirit of the Soda Pop Kids. The child war-riors look determined but small in the overwhelming environment.
Commander Light Wars barks to his troops: “Values shields to the ready! Deflect! Repel! Dissolve! Disengage!”
A noisy, clanging, smoky battle scene can be discerned by the sleeping parent. He awakens in a cold sweat and shakes his head at the humor he can find in his “nightmare.”
He knows where his adolescents are, safe in their beds. He knows he and other caring people have assisted them with learning a set of values that can serve them well, especially important in these years of newly forming independence of thought and action. The father says to himself, “Values shields in place, hope they come in handy!”
The fifth measure for good Ph concerns the extent to which children are armed with values, congruent with the lives they are expected to lead. Adults who are responsible for children teach them how to behave toward one another, how to achieve and persevere despite the possibility of adversity, and how to keep themselves intact physically and psychologically. The battle metaphor in the title of this chapter and as the theme in this vignette seems appropriate; stimulating people, events and contexts that bombard children, must be filtered or battled from time to time. Although the father in the vignette cannot be certain his children use the values they have learned from him each day, he can feel assured that he and other caring people have taught them well. These social relationships prove once again to be integral to the healthy psychological Raising Kids in the 21st Century: The Science of Psychological Health for Children. Sharon K. Hall
